Hiking Merit Badge 10-mile Hike #4: Cuyahoga Valley NP Jaite Loop

Hiking Merit Badge 10-mile Hike #4: Cuyahoga Valley NP Jaite Loop

We are hiking 10 miles on Saturday, March 4th in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  This is the fourth 10-mile hike for the Hiking merit badge.  Remember, in order to earn the badge, you must complete three 10-mile hikes (along with a 15-mile hike and a 20-mile hike).  If you have participated in the first three 10-mile hikes, you are not required to attend this hike, but you are more than welcome to join us.  Also, if you aren’t participating in the Hiking MB, but just want to get some exercise, and add to your hiking miles total, please feel free to attend.  Philmont participants working on their 50-mile requirement should also consider tagging along.

Our route on the Jaite Loop will take us over rugged hills, through wooded valleys, across the Cuyahoga River, and along the historic Towpath Trail. We will also hike to Brandywine Falls, one of the most popular and picturesque locations in the park. This hike will be our toughest yet and will include the most elevation change—hopefully you’ve stayed in shape in 2017! After the hike, be sure to complete your report and send it to Mr. Whitecar.

Remember to carry a full daypack with two quarts of water, trail snacks and a lunch, rain/winter gear, spare socks, and other essentials.

The crew is meeting at Chapman Elementary at 9:00 a.m. Please be prompt! Parents are encouraged to drive to the Jaite trailhead and are welcome to join the hike. If you are not driving from Strongsville or are driving separately, please meet us at the Red Lock parking lot on Highland Road around 9:35-9:45 a.m. We are anticipating a return to Chapman around 4:00 p.m.

For 40 years, boys have joined Troop 701 of Strongsville, Ohio for one simple reason: "Because they wanted to." Together on the Scouting trail to Eagle they experience adventure, discovery and teamwork.
