Backpack Camp Information

Backpack Camp is scheduled for the weekend of October 16-17. If you’ve never backpacked before, or you are a seasoned hiker with 100’s of hiking miles, this is a great opportunity for all of our scouts to have a positive and fun backpacking experience! Please make sure to sign up on TroopWebHost. Since each scout is responsible for bringing his own food to camp (more on that below), the cost for this camp will be $10.

We will be meeting in the Camp Butler parking lot (800 W Streetsboro Rd, Peninsula, OH 44264) at 9:00 AM on Saturday morning. Please be prompt, with your backpack packed and ready to go, so that we can get our hikes started as soon as possible. For this camp, we split in to two different groups, based on grade. Scouts in 6th and 7th grade will be one hiking group, and scouts in 8th grade and higher will be in the other hiking group. The younger group will hike about 6 miles in total over the two days, while the older group will hike around 9.5 miles. Scouts can be picked up in the Camp Butler parking lot at 10:00 AM on Sunday morning.

As was mentioned above, each scout is responsible for bringing his own food to this camp. A fall backpacking gear list and food instructions are located at https://troop701.com/fall-backpacking-gear-list/. Please have your Scout review them carefully, and go over them with him, so that he is ready for the trip. Here are a few additional gear notes:

-Each scout is responsible for bringing their own tent to camp.
-Please also pack a couple of masks.
-Please pack all of your food in a string bag or similar sized bag (or bring one with you). We will be storing the food overnight in vehicles, and it’s helpful and more organized if each Scout has all of their food in one bag.
-You do not need to bring a gallon of water, but please make sure you have two filled 1-quart water bottles packed in your backpack.
-The troop will be supplying hiking maps, as well as a couple of compasses per hiking group, but scouts are welcome to bring their own compass if they would like.

Parents, while it’s your role to support your Scout, please remember that it’s a Scout’s job to pack his own backpack and assemble the food that he will need on the trek. This way, he will be familiar with the gear and food he is bringing, and where to find it in his pack.

Backpacking Camp is a great way to spend time with friends, enjoy the outdoors, and earn some hiking miles! If you have any questions about camp, please do not hesitate to talk to an adult leader.

For 40 years, boys have joined Troop 701 of Strongsville, Ohio for one simple reason: "Because they wanted to." Together on the Scouting trail to Eagle they experience adventure, discovery and teamwork.
