Scouting America has developed some outstanding resources to help its youth members learn about teen suicide, ideation, warning sign identification, and prevention. Scouting’s mission is always to teach young people resilience and skills to face whatever adverse challenges arise.
Toward that end, we have asked Jeff Riskin, a child clinical social worker and Troop 701 Eagle Dad, to lead a presentation for our Scouts (and any interested parents) on Tuesday, January 14. Drawing on his decades of experience with youth mental health and the Scouting America resources, including a well-produced video, Jeff will walk our Scouts through warning signs they may see in their friends and how to respond to them. He’ll answer questions from the Scouts and parents, and raise awareness of available resources.
Parents who are concerned about the topic or don’t think it’s appropriate for their child have the opportunity to opt-out of that portion of the January 14 meeting. The session will begin at 7:45 PM and run about 30 minutes until the end of the troop meeting
That being said, we feel the topic is timely and relevant and important for our Scouts, so we encourage all troop families to participate.
